Cycle a classic—Hamburg to Dresden along the Elbe River Cycle Path and visit communities, many dating to the 1st millennium. Hamburg the second largest city in Germany, with its port known as the “Gateway to Europe.” Largely destroyed during World War II, it has been rebuilt into a splendorous metropolis. Dresden is known for having the best museums in Germany. Along the way, we see Lauenburg, founded in 1182, with some historic buildings and the UNESCO biosphere “Flusslandschaft Elbe.”
We stay in Wittenberg overlooking the Elbe River. In Magdeburg, founded by Charlemagne in 805 AD, we see several historic buildings, such as the Lutheran Cathedral of Saints, the tallest church in eastern Germany. In Wittenberg, the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation by Martin Luther, we visit the historical centre, the site of many UNESCO World Heritage buildings. In Dessau, the home of modernist architecture, we will see the Bauhaus Dessau Building, one of the buildings of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and many other buildings of modernistic design.
The route is well-known and follows the Elbe River Cycle Path
Day 1: Individual arrival in Hamburg. In the afternoon, we set aside time for the trip orientation meeting, bike rental fitting or unpacking your bike
Day 2: Hamburg – Lauenburg (approx. 55 km, 220m)
We start our cycle tour along the Elbe Cycle Path from Geeshacht to the sailor city of Lauenburg.
Day 3: Lauenburg – Hitzacker (approx. 55 km, 400m)
Today, you will bike through dreamy villages and the beautiful region to the city of Hitzacker – one of the most attractive cities on the German Timber-Frame Road.
Day 4: Hitzacker – Wittenberge (approx. 78 km, 330m)
today you’ll ride through small villages to the Nature Paradise of the Elbe Valley. You will continue your journey through to Wittenberge.
Day 5: Wittenberge – Havelberg (approx. 37km,
The world-famous Singer Sewing Machine Company was set up there in 1903. After leaving the city of Wittenberge, you will soon comfortably reach Havelberg. The city’s romantic dome,
Day 6: Havelberg – Tangermünde (approx. 41 km, 280m)
We ride from Havelberg to Büttnershof, to Tangermünde, which is one of the jewels of the Altmark.
Day 7: Tangermünde – Magdeburg (approx. 80 km, 280)
Shortly before reaching Magdeburg, we recommend a short break at the imposing “European water junction”. This connects the Elbe, the Elbe-Havel-Canal and the Midland Canal.
Day 8: Magdeburg – Day off
Day 9: Magdeburg – Dessau (approx. 45 km, 290m)
The Elbe will lead you through the Biosphere Reserve of the Mid-Elbe. The Bauhaus building and the Masters’ houses from Kandinsky, Klee or Feininger, are all UNESCO world cultural heritage listed.
Day 10: Dessau – Lutherstadt Wittenberg (approx. 68km, 220m
The 100 hectares of the garden realm. An ideal spot to relax and enjoy the beauty around. Continue biking to Lutherstadt Wittenberg. This city is famous for being the initial location of Martin Luther’s Reformation. Luther Memorials in Wittenberg are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Day 11: Lutherstadt Wittenberg – Torgau (approx. 68 km, 220m)
Torgau – Sights include the historic town centre, restored since the unification, a brewery museum, the monument for the meeting of the Russian and American troops on the Elbe and a Russian military cemetery. The early Renaissance Hartenfels castle dominates the town. With Renaissance elements. It was consecrated by Martin Luther on 5 October 1544. Brown bears are still kept in the moat.
Day 12: Torgau – Riesa (approx. 50 km, 180m).
Day 13: Riesa – Dresden (approx. 56 km, 330m)
You will pass a picturesque wine village and the wine and porcelain city of Meißen. The cycle path takes you to Dresden. Here, the Church of our Lady, the Zwinger Palace, the Semper Opera House and the beautiful Brühlsche terraces await your arrival.
Day 14: Individual departure
Individual departure or extend your bike tour with extra nights in Dresden or continue to Prague.
