Biking In New Zealand

West Coast

Your West Coast New Zealand Cycle Tour starts in the small community of Punakaiki, which lies between Westport and Greymouth. Home to the spectacular Pancake Rocks and Blowholes located at Dolomite Point is where our cycle adventure begins. On the morning the tour commences, our guide will be driving from Christchurch on the East Coast of the South Island, across the Southern Alps to Punakaiki on the West Coast. Please let us know if you would like a ride in the minibus and where you will be staying in Christchurch the night before commencing the trip. Alternatively you can take the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth. We can help to organise a transfer to Punakaiki.

From here we head south, pedaling through lush rainforest, past picture perfect West Coast Glaciers and lakes. There is a rest day at Franz Josef Glacier with the opportunity for hiking or sightseeing. We stay at a Wilderness Lodge in the rain forest where you can walk to the beach and possibly see penguins. We cross Haast Pass to sheep country and Wanaka set on beautiful Lake Wanaka, over looked by Mt Aspiring National Park.

Your tour includes quiet, off the beaten track back-roads, glaciers, rainforests, lakes and snowy peaks. “The Lord of the Rings” was filmed here on the West Coast, (or Te Wahi Pounamu to give it its Maori name). It is rightly recognized as a World Heritage Area.  Your West Coast New Zealand Cycle Tour finishes in Queenstown.  Surrounded by mountain peaks (including the famous Remarkables) and set on Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown has much to offer.

The mini-bus departs Christchurch this morning before heading across the Alps and through the spectacular Otira Gorge to Punakaiki. Visit the Pancake Rocks and blowholes.

DAY 2  HOKITIKA.

We head south along the rainforest clad coast to Greymouth and then to Hokitika, a former gold rush town.

DAY 3 + 4  FRANZ JOSEF

A shorter ride cycle over Mt Hercules, with a flat run into Westland National Park and Franz Josef Glacier where you will have superb views of snow-capped peaks. A rest day gives time for a walk to the glacier, a day on the beach, a visit to the white heron colony, or a scenic flight.

DAY 5  LAKE MOERAKI.

DAY 6  MAKARORA.

Knights Point affords excellent views of the rugged coastline where seals can often be seen basking in the sun.

DAY 7 + 8  WANAKA.

Spectacular mountain and lake views as we pass Lakes Hawea and Wanaka. Visit a vineyard or take a hike up Mt Iron.
